QR Codes... what the heck are those?

So you get a postcard in the mail and there in the corner is this pixellated mess. It looks like this:

A QR Code is a cell phone readable bar code that can store phone numbers, a web address, an email address and pretty much any other alphanumeric data. Because it's easier to point and click than type out some big long URL. In theory, anyway.
Right now, QR codes are still new enough that 9 out of 10 people won't have any idea what they are (very informal statistic that I just made up.) But the adoption rate is speeding along. In fact, people are putting them on shirts, billboards, hats and business cards. A recent conference let participants include a QR code with their contact info on their badges, allowing for a more instant exchange of information than handing over business cards or even using the Bump app.
Have you used a QR code or seen one in play? Let me know!
